How to choose a dog bed that fits
A practical checklist for matching bed size, support, materials, and care needs to your dog.
Reviewed September 13, 2026 · Educational information, not veterinary advice
Start with sleeping position, not a size label
Measure your dog while fully stretched out, then allow extra room so the bed does not force a curled position. Retailer labels such as medium and large are not standardized, so compare the actual interior sleeping dimensions.
Bolstered beds can suit dogs that like resting their head against an edge. A flatter, unobstructed surface may be easier for a dog that sprawls or has limited mobility.
Match support to the individual dog
Age alone does not determine the right support. Consider mobility, body condition, how easily your dog rises, and advice from your veterinarian. Foam thickness is not the same thing as firmness or durability.
A product marketed as orthopedic is not automatically a medical treatment. Ask a veterinarian about persistent stiffness, pain, sudden changes in sleep, or difficulty standing.
Check the ownership details
Look for a removable washable cover, clear cleaning instructions, a non-slip base where needed, replacement-cover availability, and a return policy that permits a realistic fit check.
For dogs that chew or swallow fabric, no soft bed should be described as indestructible. Supervise use and remove damaged material promptly.
